Interactive List of the Best

Id like your help with this post. Im going to post some of my favorite things for travelers, the homeless, or just anyone, and I am going to post some categories and items that I need suggestions on. If you have a real favorite item, and I mean an unequivocal ten on a scale of one to ten, respond with it in the comments, or drop me an email, and I will revise the post, unless I disagree. Tell everyone what makes it a really good product. We can have more than one best in a given area, for instance, a best quality, and a best deal. Id like to get a core list for homeless perfection.

Best All-Around Personal Care Product: Generic KY Jelly - There are lots of good reasons to make things slick, a waterless shave, a hair tamer, and of course there is the original use. No one ever felt cheated of their two bucks for a tube of sex gel.

Best Razor: There is no comparable disposable razor to the Mach 3 triple blade, but it is pricey at two bucks each, and it is only the first two or three shaves with each razor that are really good. For my money, I like the Gillette Good News razor with lubricating strip. It is a very high quality double blade, most shaves are bloodless, and at thirtyfive to fourtyfive cents each I feel okay about discarding them after two or three shaves, thus I am always shaving with a sharp razor, and life is good.

Best Portable Propane Stove: The worst is any of them that balance a single burner on top of a 16 ounce propane bottle. I used these stoves for years before I realized how annoying and dangerous they are. One little bump, an uneven surface, a badly balanced pan and over it goes, causing scalds and wasting food. I hate them. By contrast, Coleman makes a dandy two burner stove that folds up like a briefcase and takes up very little room in the car. It is usually sold for around $60, but the link I have provided is for a Walmart clearance that has them down to $35. Target and Kmart and Walmart continously knock off copycats that are just as good and sell them for under forty bucks. You are just looking for a two burner, briefcase style, propane stove.

Trial Sizes
: The best place to look for your hygiene needs is the trial size aisle or end cap at your local supermarket or drug store. Youll find all sorts of neat items, containers, travel toothbrushes, mouthwashes, picks, floss, shampoo, combs, brushes, razors, creams, lotions, antiseptics, astringents, analgesics, cold medicines, bandages, caffeine stimulants, and much more for pennies. It is a sort of mobile lifestyle treasure spot. Look for it.

Best Hot Water Bottle:

Best Hand Warmer: The EZ Heat Reusable Handwarmer is a real star. I had one of these many years ago and had not known where to find another until this reader suggestion. Click the metal disk for instant heat lasting more than half an hour, and boil it to reset. Enjoy the residual heat on both sides of the cycle. Oh! I so love this product. The best seven bucks youve ever spent. Do a quick Google search and you will find scads of sites selling them.

Best Road Blanket:

Best Car Cover: Were looking for one that is not very translucent, has good tie down points, and allows you to get into and out of the car fairly easily after it is installed.

Help me out here. Tell me your best tips. Only tens. No nines.

A Primer on Good Sets for Parts

It seems lately that some people are confused about why I recommend certain Lego sets as being "good for parts" and not others.  And, to be honest, I was a little annoyed by these questions.  After thinking for most of the day I realized that not everyone sees things the way I do and Ive been involved in this hobby for a number of years while others are new to it.

So, on to the questions.

"What are "fiddly bits?""

These are all the fun pieces that we use to build mechs.

"Theres really no note about which of those are really best."

This is subjective.  The one that is best has the parts you need right at that moment.

"How many Mech you can really make from it.", "How many mechs can I build if I buy just one set?"

This is also subjective.  Whats your skill level?  What are you trying to build?  What scale are you building in?  Different designs take different amounts of parts.  If you want to build a more complex design its going to take more parts.

"How many different sets will it take to build one of the mechs in the book?"

I dont know.  I havent done the research.  If youre looking to build mechs from the book why not try the Garage Kit?  It was designed to create five mechs from one of the factions in the game.

"What parts will I be missing?"

Again, I dont know.

You wrote "Where do I actually buy these?"

ToysRUs, Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, 5 Below, etc.  are all stores in my area that carry Lego.  It depends where you live and what the retail presence in your area is like.

"The link sends me to bricklink but theres no option to actually buy these things?"

The link to Bricklink is there so you can look at the inventory of the set and decide for yourself if its worth buying.  If you click on the Set number on the inventory page it will bring you to another page where you can then navigate to "lots for sale".

"I went to the nearest toy store I could find and when I asked for the first list linked they didnt have anyof the sets. The woman behind the counter said that theyd all been discontinued."

The list was started a year before the blog even existed.  Ive been posting for a year and a half.  Lego releases new sets and discontinues old ones every six months.  Which means that weve gone through at least five inventory cycles since this list was started.  So, yes, those first sets are discontinued.  Ill try and update the list to make it a little clearer.

"Im getting really frustrated with people just tossing me links without any actual explanation about why these sets are good."

Theyre good because they contain good parts for building in microscale at a good price.  Thats it.  The most I can tell people is "look at this set, it has good parts for a good price".

"Theres a local Lego store not that far from my place. Am I better off just going there and rummaging through the pick-a-brick section?"

You can try, but in general the Pick-A-Brick wall is aimed more at kids than the adult builder.  You will be able to pick up a lot of bricks for terrain and cover though.

I hope these answers help people understand my GSfP posts.

Build Journal Clockwork Ruffian

Im working on a new frame.  I originally called it the "Loki" because of the helmet.  I decided though that due to the large chest this doesnt look quite as svelte as a Loki might look.  I then decided that this would be called the "Ruffian".  The "Clockwork" addition came along a little later as this looks slightly steampunky to my eye.

Angled and front views.

I started with a torso section I copied from Pasukaru 76.  My problems with using it are detailed here.

Front and side views.  The small wings are an addition of mine.

I then added arms, a front plate, and a head.  The arms are a minor variation on what I used on the Hephaestus.

The legs were created separately.  Theyre a little spindly and will probably go through another iteration before Im finished.

Heres a comparison shot with a Chub to give you an idea of its size.  Im still working on this one and Im not sure where its going to end up or what the final look is going to be.
